The Future Growth of Lacrosse needs Certified Officials

Lacrosse in South Florida is at a crossroads? We are in the early stages of the most rapid growth the sport has ever seen with more school and recreational programs starting every month. Boys and girls from Vero Beach to the Florida Keys are leaving other sports in droves to pick up a stick to find out what the sport is all about. The membership base for the South Florida Chapter of US Lacrosse has grown 50% during the past 12 months alone. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that if something is not done immediately to recruit and train additional referees and umpires we risk jeopardizing the future growth of the sport. What kind of credibility would lacrosse have if we are unable to provide certified officials for every game that is scheduled?

We must act now because the 2008 season is just around the corner. There are several ways that you can help fill this need for officials:

·        You love the sport and want to get more involved

·        You have played lacrosse in college or post collegiate club and want to give something back

·        You can relay this information to someone you know who has played the sport

·        You are a coach of a High School team and can recruit players from your program

US Lacrosse has implemented  training programs (Level 1 and Level 2) combining classroom instruction and hands on field work with the goal of teaching the skills necessary to become a certified lacrosse official. Information about the locations and dates for these clinics can be found at www.uslacrosse.org/programs/officialstraining or by contacting one of the following people:
